Abstract This paper studies a Galician folktale about three rivers (Eume, Sor and Landro), featured as three fountain sisters born in the Xistral Sierra (Lugo). The author contends that the story in reality preserves an etiological myth of Celtic tradition, perhaps from the time of the Briton colonization in western Asturias and northern Galicia (c. V-VIII AD). To this effect, he points to the parallel folktale about the three sisters from Mount Plynlimon (Severn, Wye and Ystwyth), in Wales.
